VLP Partner Melissa Krasnow wrote an article for International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI) titled “State Breach Notification Laws: Personal Information Definition.”
Forty-eight states, plus the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, have breach notification laws. These laws can differ in significant ways. The definition of personal information in these laws continues to expand to include more types of personal information.
In this article, Ms. Krasnow offered insight into the criteria that certain state breach notification laws use to define personal information.
