VLP Partner Melissa Krasnow was quoted in the in Wall Street Journal Pro Cybersecurity article “After Setback, Tech Firms Renew Push for Federal AI Regulation.”

Technology firms including Microsoft, Amazon, Google as well as venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz continue to support federal artificial intelligence regulation, after Congress stripped a multi-year moratorium on state AI laws out of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Rep. Jay Obernolte (R., Calif.), co-chair of the House task force on AI, has pressed Congress to pass a federal bill in months rather than years.

Ms. Krasnow said that Federal data-privacy legislation remains stalled “despite a chorus of different voices calling for this over many years….[while at the same time]….state AI laws are not always signed into law by state governors, regardless of where they are on the political spectrum.” Earlier this year, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed the state’s first AI bill. Both Colorado and California lawmakers have clashed over efforts to amend their existing AI laws.
