VLP permits partners to grow their practices in multiple, creative ways, as opposed to the linear track at traditional transactional firms. Unlike traditional firms which inexorably demand ever increasing billings by partners to support never ending overhead expenses, VLP is flexible, not insisting or relying on ever increasing books of business and billing rates. Some VLP partners work with teams of lawyers, while others generally do not. Some VLP lawyers work with start-up companies, while others work with national banks or Fortune 500 companies. Just because you are not part of a brick and mortar firm doesn’t mean you cannot have traditional law firm support. VLP is a full-fledged law firm with the capability to seamlessly handle your IT and administrative needs (including legal conflicts, human resources, and payroll) so that you can focus on your clients instead of the unbillable chores that cut into a small firm lawyer’s or solo practitioner’s time and productivity. Like traditional firms, VLP handles all billing and supports all collection efforts. We provide an IT infrastructure that links you to the rest of the firm and stores all documents and confidential information securely – and it’s backed by a world-class tech team. In addition, we are a collegial group of lawyers who work closely and collaboratively on client and firm matters. Often many lawyers from different specialties, including, for example, mergers and acquisitions, commercial debt, intellectual property and tax lawyers, will work as a team on a particular matter, as they would at any traditional firm. We keep current on legal issues through our practice group meetings, talk about current events on our virtual watercooler, meet for lunch, go out after work, and raise money for charity. We also make the effort to see each other face to face. Multiple times a year our lawyers from across the country travel to meet in person at firmwide retreats.
VLP’s model is simple. We can charge less, and keep more for ourselves, because we don’t ask our clients to subsidize junior lawyer training and bloated overhead costs. We have found that our clients are as busy as we are, and perfectly comfortable relying on teleconferences and video conferences, making large legal offices unnecessary. VLP is looking for attorneys with excellent academic credentials, outstanding professional experience and a minimum of six years of practice with an AmLaw 100 law firm, successful solo or boutique practice, and/or a major corporation.
