David Roise is a Partner in VLP’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. David is a patent attorney, specializing in the preparation and prosecution of patents in all areas of chemistry and the life sciences. He also provides advice to clients regarding patentability, freedom to operate, and global patent strategy.

David works with a wide variety of clients, from small biotech start-ups and university tech transfer offices to major pharmaceutical companies. He has experience in a broad range of technologies, including small-molecule pharmaceuticals, drug delivery methods and agents, drug screening methods, genetic diagnostics, stem cell and cellular reprograming technologies, nucleic acid sequencing methods and instruments, and medical devices. In addition to drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. and around the world, he also provides strategic patent counseling, patentability and freedom-to-operate searching, and patent due diligence for companies and their investors.

David was a basic scientist prior to attending law school. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry and biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and performed post-doctoral research on mitochondrial protein transport in Switzerland before becoming an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego. After attending Stanford Law School, David joined IP boutique Fish & Neave, later Ropes & Gray LLP, where his practice included early-stage patent litigation, non-infringement and invalidity opinion writing, patentability and freedom-to-operate searching, patent due diligence, and patent prosecution in all of the above areas of technology.
