VLP Partner Melissa Krasnow Authors International Risk Management Institute Article “Guidance on Ransomware”

Posted on Jan 4, 2017 in News by Melissa Krasnow

VLP Partner Melissa Krasnow wrote an article for International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI) titled “Guidance on Ransomware.” The article addressed 10 questions about ransomware, based on guidance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to the FTC, ransomware is a form of malicious software that infiltrates computer systems or networks and uses tools like encryption to deny access or hold data “hostage” until the victim pays a ransom, frequently demanding payment in Bitcoin. According to the FBI, after the initial infection, the ransomware attempts to spread to shared storage drives and other accessible systems. If the demands are not met, the system or encrypted data remains unavailable, or data may be deleted.
